The success of these individuals speaks to a widespread appetite for sculptural and novelty cakes for occasions like weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, or corporate events. This hunger has been building over the past decade, thanks in large part to television, social media, and an influx of practitioners from art, design, and other creative industries. It’s come to a point where cakes that resemble sculpture are commonplace—with many requiring comparable skill and technique to accomplish as a work of art. (The distinction between cakes and art is tenuous, and has its own implications for the law; whether or not cake is legally considered a work of art is being debated in a Supreme Court case. Start with the blue sugar and sprinkle a thick coat on the left third of the frosting so it looks like a blue stripe. Use the yellow sugar next and sprinkle a thick coat on the middle of the cupcake to look like a yellow stripe. Use the red sugar last to sprinkle on a thick coat for a red stripe on the right third of the cupcake. It should resemble a snow cone.
However I had to chuckle when I saw one of the cakes was a birthday cake for a 30-year old sofa! Clearly there are some television lovers who like nothing more than a night on the sofa in front of the TV, while other couples maybe like to have a cuddle up on the sofa instead.
